My story began when I moved to North Carolina and started hunting for treasures that have washed ashore. Oyster shells are plentiful in our area, where I have enjoyed collecting them and envisioning what they could become. I saw the face of Santa Claus in their shape and thus my art business was born.
I go to local beaches several times a week. Only unbroken shells that are the right size and shape make it home.
All shells are thoroughly washed, sanitized, scrubbed and dried out. It’s quite a process for sure!
After cleaning, a hole is drilled in the shells that will become ornaments. The faces are formed using clay, Accents and embellishments added. When dry, they are painted and then sealed. The shape of the shell determines how the face will be formed. It is fun watching their individual personalities emerge!
